Painting Description
"Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Belley" is an acclaimed painting created by French artist Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Tson in 1797. The work is significant for its subject – a former enslaved man from Senegal, Belley, who had made a name for himself as a prominent deputy in the French Revolutionary National Convention. Girodet, widely recognized for his Romantic orientation and support of the French Revolution, used this painting to produce a compelling presentation of Belley, thereby marking a milestone in Western art with one of the first respectful and sympathetic depictions of a black person.
The portrait features Belley standing upright in a proud and dignified pose, dressed in the attire of a deputy of the Convention. He is depicted leaning against a marble bust of philosopher Guillaume-Thomas Raynal, known for his abolitionist views, indirectly linking Belley to the cause against slavery. Girodet uses light and darkness to create a striking contrast, emphasizing the subject's physique and intense gaze, and depicting his African heritage by portraying realistic features and skin tone, in stark contrast to the stereotyped and often reductive depictions of the time.
The portrait now belongs to the collection of the Musée National du Château de Versailles in Versailles, France, and continues to be one of Girodet's most praised works, as it intersects issues of race, politics, and the changing definitions of liberty and equality during the French Revolution. Its historical and artistic significance affords it a key role in the discussions around the depiction of race in Western art.
