Painting Description
The Perugia Altarpiece is an iconic piece of artwork by the Early Renaissance painter, Fra Angelico. This altarpiece, guilded and painted between 1437 and 1447, was created for the St. Nicholas Chapel in the church of San Domenico, Perugia, Italy.
The altarpiece is made up of multiple predella panels and is a fine example of Fra Angelico's distinctively ethereal and detailed work. The central panel displays a grand depiction of the Madonna and Child, surrounded by angels and saints. Not, the backdrop of intricately designed gold leaf adds depth and luminosity to the painting, a testament to the prevailing Gothic sensibilities of the time.
The side panels are equally rich with narrative and symbolism. They depict stories from the lives of St. Nicholas and St. John the Baptist. Among these, the most well-known scenes are ‘St. Nicholas Saving a Shipwreck’ and 'The Beheading of St. John the Baptist.'
The Perugia Altarpiece, with its synthesis of gothic and renaissance elements, is an embodiment of the artistic transition that was occurring in Italy during the 15th century. It showcases Fra Angelico's signature combination of spiritual depth of subject with the aesthetic and technical developments of the Early Renaissance, making it a crucial work for understanding the trajectory of European art history.
