Painting Description
'''Firmamentum Sobiescianum sive Uranographia''' is a star atlas and celestial catalogue created by the renowned Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius and published posthumously in 1687. The atlas is notable for its detailed and meticulous charts of the night sky, as well as for its artistic engravings, which were executed by the engraver Carolus de la Haye. Commissioned by King John III Sobieski of Poland, after whom the work is named, ''Firmamentum Sobiescianum'' stands as one of the most significant achievements in the field of astronomy during the 17th century.
The atlas contains 56 large, double-page star charts and includes over 1,500 stars more than any previous catalogue. Hevelius's work was based on his own telescopic observations, which were among the most precise of his time, and it significantly expanded upon the celestial cartography established by earlier astronomers such as Tycho Brahe and Johann Bayer. ''Firmamentum Sobiescianum'' is also notable for introducing several new constellations, many of which are still recognized by astronomers today.
Published by Andrzej Stech in Gdańsk, the atlas reflects the culmination of Hevelius's lifelong dedication to the study of the stars. It was one of the last major star atlases to depict the constellations as they were seen from Earth, before the introduction of the telescopic star map, which inverted the view to correspond with the telescopic perspective. ''Firmamentum Sobiescianum'' is not only a landmark in the history of astronomy but also a masterpiece of baroque art, combining scientific precision with elaborate and imaginative illustrations.
