Painting Description
The San Zeno Altarpiece Resurrection is a renowned painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna, created as part of the larger San Zeno Altarpiece for the San Zeno Basilica in Verona. This particular panel, depicting the Resurrection of Jesus, is celebrated for Mantegna's masterful use of perspective and his ability to convey the spiritual significance of the scene through his innovative artistic techniques.
Andrea Mantegna (c. 1431 – September 13, 1506) was an Italian painter, a student of Roman archeology, and son-in-law of Jacopo Bellini. Like other artists of the time, Mantegna experimented with perspective, e.g., by lowering the horizon in order to create a sense of greater monumentality. His unique approach to composition and his detailed attention to the human form and emotion set his work apart from his contemporaries.
The San Zeno Altarpiece was commissioned by the abbot of the San Zeno Basilica, Gregorio Correr, and was completed in 1459. The altarpiece was originally composed of several panels, with the Resurrection being one of the predella scenes at the bottom of the larger work. The main altarpiece depicted the Madonna and Child in the central panel, flanked by various saints. The Resurrection panel is particularly noted for its dramatic portrayal of Christ rising from the tomb, with Roman soldiers sleeping around it, oblivious to the miraculous event.
Mantegna's use of foreshortening and his attention to the details of the soldiers' armors and the landscape in the background are indicative of his deep understanding of both classical art and the innovations of the Renaissance. The Resurrection panel, along with the other parts of the San Zeno Altarpiece, was removed during the Napoleonic Wars and subsequently dispersed. Today, the original panels are housed in different museums, with the Resurrection panel itself residing in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours, France.
The San Zeno Altarpiece Resurrection is a significant work in Mantegna's oeuvre and in the history of Renaissance art. It exemplifies the transition from the Gothic style to the more naturalistic and human-centered approach of the Renaissance. The panel continues to be studied for its artistic merit and its role in the development of Western art.
