Painting Description
The Paumgartner altarpiece is a triptych oil painting by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, commissioned by the Paumgartner family of Nuremberg around 1503. The central panel of the altarpiece depicts the Nativity of Jesus, while the two side wings feature the figures of Saints George and Eustace. The work is notable for its combination of sacred subject matter with contemporary elements, including the portraits of the patrons themselves, Stephan Paumgartner and his brother Lukas, who are depicted as Saint George and Saint Eustace.
The altarpiece showcases Dürer's skill in rendering detail and his ability to blend Northern Renaissance realism with Italian Renaissance principles of perspective and proportion. The central panel is rich in symbolism and meticulously painted details, such as the depiction of the Christ Child glowing with divine light, which illuminates the surrounding figures and landscape. The wings, when closed, display a monochrome painted exterior, a technique known as grisaille, which gives the appearance of stone sculptures.
Originally located in the family chapel of St. Catherine's Church in Nuremberg, the Paumgartner altarpiece was later acquired by the Bavarian royal family and is now housed in the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich. The work has undergone several restorations, the most recent of which revealed Dürer's original paint layers and the altarpiece's vibrant colors. The Paumgartner altarpiece remains an important example of Dürer's religious commissions and is a significant piece within the oeuvre of one of the most influential artists of the Northern Renaissance.
