Painting Description
''The Rhinoceros'' is a woodcut print created by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer in 1515. Based on a written description and brief sketch received from Lisbon, Dürer depicted the rhinoceros without having seen the animal himself, resulting in a somewhat inaccurate but highly compelling portrayal. The woodcut shows the animal covered in an armor-like hide with hard plates and a small twisted horn on its back, which is not present in real rhinoceroses. Despite these inaccuracies, Dürer's Rhinoceros was regarded as a true representation of the species in Europe until the late 18th century.
The print was produced following the arrival of an Indian rhinoceros in Lisbon, the first example of the animal to be seen in Europe since Roman times. The rhinoceros had been a gift from Sultan Muzafar II of Gujarat to the Portuguese king Manuel I and was briefly exhibited in a grand public showing. Dürer's depiction quickly became very popular in Europe and was widely copied and distributed. It stood as a testament to Dürer's skill in woodcut design and his ability to blend imaginative artistry with elements of naturalism, despite the second-hand nature of his source material.
The Rhinoceros is considered one of the most iconic images of Renaissance printmaking and reflects the period's growing interest in exotic animals as Europeans expanded their geographical knowledge through exploration. The woodcut itself is a masterful example of the technique, showcasing Dürer's attention to detail and his ability to convey texture and form. It remains an important work in the study of both art history and the history of zoological illustration.
