Painting Description
''The Large Passion'' is a series of woodcut prints by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created between 1497 and 1510. This series, along with ''The Small Passion'' and ''The Life of the Virgin'', represents one of Dürer's most significant contributions to the medium of woodcut and reflects his deep engagement with Christian religious themes. The ''Large Passion'' includes twelve plates depicting the Passion of Christ, the period from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion, as well as a title page featuring the Man of Sorrows seated on the tomb.
Dürer's work on ''The Large Passion'' began in the late 15th century, with the first woodcuts appearing around 1497. He continued to work on this series intermittently, with the bulk of the prints being completed by 1510. The series was published in book form in 1511, accompanied by Latin text from the four Gospels and a prayer by Benedictus Chelidonius. The ''Large Passion'' is notable for its expressive detail, technical mastery, and the emotional intensity of the scenes depicted. Dürer's innovative approach to woodcut design, with its intricate lines and dramatic use of light and shadow, helped elevate the medium to new artistic heights.
The prints from ''The Large Passion'' are considered some of Dürer's masterpieces and are exemplary of his skill in conveying complex narratives and emotions through the woodcut medium. The series has been widely studied for its artistic, cultural, and theological significance, and original prints are held in various museum collections around the world. The ''Large Passion'' continues to be a subject of scholarly interest and is recognized as a landmark in the history of graphic art, reflecting the Northern Renaissance's preoccupation with religious devotion and the human condition.
