Painting Description
"The Fifth and Sixth Trumpets," also known as "The Four Angels of the Euphrates," is a woodcut by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created as part of his "Apocalypse" series. This series, completed around 1498, is one of Dürer's most significant contributions to printmaking and illustrates the Book of Revelation by John the Apostle. The woodcuts in this series are notable for their intricate detail, expressive figures, and the innovative use of the woodcut medium, which Dürer elevated to a level of fine art.
The woodcut depicting "The Fifth and Sixth Trumpets" is particularly remarkable for its vivid portrayal of the apocalyptic visions described in Revelation 9:1-14. The fifth trumpet, also known as the first woe, shows a star fallen from heaven to earth, to whom is given the key to the bottomless pit. From the pit arises smoke that darkens the air, and out of the smoke come locusts with the power to torment those who do not bear the seal of God on their foreheads. Dürer's interpretation of this scene is filled with dramatic intensity and chaotic energy, as he depicts the locusts with fearsome, fantastical features.
The sixth trumpet, or the second woe, unleashes four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates. These angels are prepared to slay a third of mankind with an army of two hundred million horsemen. Dürer's representation of this scene is equally compelling, with a horde of riders and horses conveying the scale and terror of the apocalyptic prophecy.
Dürer's "The Fifth and Sixth Trumpets" stands as a masterful example of Northern Renaissance art and its preoccupation with religious themes, as well as the technical prowess and imagination of one of the era's most celebrated artists. The woodcut is not only significant for its artistic merit but also for its impact on the dissemination of visual culture, as the relatively affordable and portable nature of prints allowed for a wider distribution of Dürer's apocalyptic imagery, influencing artists and the public alike.
