Painting Description
"Small Passion, 07. Christ Driving the Merchants from the Temple" is a woodcut by the renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer, part of his "Small Passion" series. Created between 1509 and 1511, this series comprises 37 woodcuts that depict various scenes from the life and Passion of Christ. The "Small Passion" is considered one of Dürer's masterpieces in the medium of woodcut and reflects his deep engagement with religious themes, as well as his innovative approach to printmaking.
The woodcut titled "Christ Driving the Merchants from the Temple" illustrates the biblical episode where Jesus expels the money changers and merchants from the Temple in Jerusalem, an event that is recounted in all four Gospels (Matthew 21:12–13, Mark 11:15–17, Luke 19:45–46, and John 2:13–16). This act of cleansing the Temple is interpreted as a demonstration of Jesus's authority and his zeal for the sanctity of worship.
In Dürer's depiction, the composition is dynamic and filled with movement, capturing the moment of righteous indignation. Christ is shown at the center of the scene, brandishing a whip as he drives out the merchants, who scramble to collect their scattered wares and money. The detailed rendering of figures and expressions conveys the chaos and the moral force of the event. Dürer's use of perspective and his ability to convey emotion and narrative through the stark contrasts of black and white are evident in this work.
The "Small Passion" series, including "Christ Driving the Merchants from the Temple," was widely disseminated and had a significant impact on the visual arts, contributing to the spread of Reformation ideas through its accessible and powerful imagery. The series was also an important milestone in the history of the book, as it was one of the earliest to be mass-produced using woodcut illustrations, making religious and artistic content available to a broader audience.
As a part of the "Small Passion," this woodcut not only showcases Dürer's technical skill but also reflects the religious and cultural milieu of early 16th-century Europe, marking a pivotal moment in the history of art where the medium of print became a crucial vehicle for expression and communication.
