Painting Description
"Rhinoceros" is a woodcut print by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created in 1515. The work is based on a written description and brief sketch by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier that year. Dürer never saw the actual animal himself and, as a result, his woodcut shows a somewhat fanciful creature. The rhinoceros is depicted with an armored body and a small spiral horn on its back, which is not a feature of the real animal.
Despite its inaccuracies, Dürer's "Rhinoceros" became one of the most famous and enduring images of the animal, circulating widely in Europe and influencing the depiction of rhinoceroses in art for centuries. The print was a commercial success for Dürer, and it was reprinted numerous times. It is considered an iconic work of art and an early example of the power of the print media to disseminate images and information.
The woodcut itself measures approximately 23.5 cm × 29.8 cm, and Dürer's monogram and the date are inscribed on the top of the print. The image was accompanied by a text written by Dürer himself, which describes the beast and its arrival in Portugal. The "Rhinoceros" is part of a body of work by Dürer that reflects his interest in natural history and his engagement with the knowledge being gathered about the wider world during the Age of Exploration.
Today, the "Rhinoceros" is held in various collections, including the British Museum in London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It remains a subject of interest not only for its artistic value but also for its place in the history of zoological illustration and the spread of information in the early modern period.
