Painting Description
''Rhinoceros'' is a woodcut print by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created in 1515. It is one of the most famous and iconic images of an animal in the history of printmaking, and it has been widely reproduced and imitated. The image was based on a written description and brief sketch by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier that year. Dürer never saw the actual rhinoceros, which was the first living example seen in Europe since Roman times.
The woodcut depicts the rhinoceros with hard, patterned plates that cover its body, resembling armor, and a small twisted horn on its back, neither of which are present in a real rhinoceros. Despite these inaccuracies, Dürer's Rhinoceros was regarded as a true representation of the species and circulated in Europe for centuries. It was even used as a model for illustrations in natural history publications as late as the 18th century, demonstrating the enduring influence of Dürer's work.
Dürer's Rhinoceros is not only significant for its impact on the depiction of the species but also as a reflection of the Renaissance period's approach to knowledge and representation of the natural world. The woodcut is a masterful example of Dürer's skill in the medium and his ability to blend imaginative interpretation with detailed observation, a hallmark of his artistry. The print remains an important work in the study of both art history and the history of zoological illustration.
