Painting Description
"Rhinoceros" is a woodcut executed by German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer in 1515. The artwork was based on a written description and brief sketch by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier that year. Dürer never saw the actual rhinoceros, which was the first living example seen in Europe since Roman times. Despite its inaccuracies, Dürer's woodcut captured the imagination of Europe and was widely circulated. The rhinoceros depicted by Dürer is armored with thick plates that look more like a suit of armor than actual animal skin, and it features a small twisted horn on its back, which is not present in real rhinoceroses.
The woodcut reflects the level of curiosity and wonder in the Renaissance Europe regarding exotic animals from distant lands. It also exemplifies the limitations of second-hand reports and artistic interpretation in the absence of empirical evidence. Dürer's "Rhinoceros" became so iconic that it was used as a model for depictions of rhinoceroses in Europe for over a century, profoundly influencing the European imagery of the animal. This work is an important piece in the study of both European art and the representation of animals in art, showing the intersection of exploration, art, and science during the Renaissance.
