Painting Description
"Melencolia I" is a copper engraving by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dür. Created in 1514, it is part of a series by Dürer referred to as his "meisterstiche" or "master engravings", which also includes "Knight, Death and the Devil" (1513), and "Saint Jerome in his Study" (4). Notably, "Melencolia I" is often considered one of the most famous prints in the world, being especially esteemed within the history of graphic art.
The artwork measures 24cm x 18.8cm and its inventive composition and intricate detailing are typical of Dürer’s works. It is filled with inscrutable elements and has been the subject of much interpretation. The engraving depicts a seated female figure surrounded by a rich array of symbolic artifacts, including an hourglass, a set of scales, a magic square, and a truncated rhombohedron.
The title of the piece, "Melencolia I", comes from the term 'melancholia' which, in the context of Dürer’s time, referred to a temperament characterized by black bile, one of the four bodily humors in pre-modern medical theory. This idea was equated with a pensive sadness, a state which many believed led to an inclination towards philosophy and art.
This artwork is associated with the freedom of imagination and the faculty of intellectual creativity and innovation. The 'I' in the title is thought as a reference to the first of the three types of melancholia defined by the German humanist scholar Cornelius Agrippa. In this type, "Imagination" predominates over "Mind" or "Reason". An alternate, yet less accepted theory, is that 'I' represents the first of three philosophical works that Dürer intended to create.
The various elements within the engraving, such as the unusual polyhedron, magic square and omnipresemt tools and shapes, have been interpreted as symbols reflecting upon philosophy, science, arts, and crafts, among many other topics. Consequently, the specific meaning of "Melencolia I" is highly debated and remains uncertain.
The numerous works inspired by "Melencolia I", and its lasting impact on the world of art, attest to the engraving's enduring significance. It is currently held by several museums around the world.
