Painting Description
"Life of the Virgin 15. Christ among the Doctors in the Temple" is a woodcut by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created around 1503 as part of his larger series depicting the life of the Virgin Mary. This woodcut illustrates the biblical episode from Luke 2:41–52, where the twelve-year-old Jesus is found by his parents in the Temple of Jerusalem, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions, to the amazement of all who heard him.
Dürer's representation of this scene is notable for its intricate detail and the expressive faces of the figures, which convey the astonishment and confusion of the learned men as they engage with the young Jesus. The composition is carefully constructed to guide the viewer's eye towards the central figure of Christ, who is depicted with a calm and knowing demeanor that contrasts with the animated gestures and expressions of the surrounding doctors.
As part of the "Life of the Virgin" series, this woodcut reflects Dürer's mastery of the medium and his ability to convey complex narratives within a single image. The series as a whole is considered one of Dürer's major achievements and a significant contribution to Northern Renaissance art, showcasing his skill in blending traditional religious themes with the emerging humanist ideals of the time.
"Christ among the Doctors in the Temple" is not only a work of religious significance but also an example of Dürer's technical prowess and his exploration of human psychology and emotion. The woodcut remains an important work for the study of Dürer's art and the broader context of Renaissance printmaking.
