Painting Description
''Le Rhinocéros'' (1515) is a woodcut print by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. It is one of the most famous and iconic images of an animal in the history of printmaking. The woodcut depicts a rhinoceros, which was based on a written description and a brief sketch by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier in 1515. The animal was the first living example seen in Europe since Roman times.
Dürer never saw the actual rhinoceros, which was a gift from Sultan Muzaffar Shah II of Gujarat to the Portuguese king Manuel I. The rhinoceros was shipped to Lisbon and later sent to Pope Leo X, but it died in a shipwreck off the coast of Italy. Despite the second-hand nature of Dürer's source material, his woodcut is a masterful and detailed work of art, though it includes several inaccuracies, such as an imagined small spiral horn on its back and a suit of armor-like skin, which is not characteristic of a real rhinoceros.
The woodcut was widely distributed and influential in early 16th-century Europe. It was copied by various artists and became the basis for how rhinoceroses were depicted in art for the next three centuries. Dürer's ''Le Rhinocéros'' is not only a testament to the artist's skill and imagination but also an example of how art can shape the perception of exotic animals in the absence of firsthand observations. The woodcut remains an important work in the study of Renaissance art and the history of zoological illustration.
