Painting Description
"Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple" is a woodcut by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created in 1508 as part of his series of woodcuts known as the "Small Passion." This series, which includes 36 woodcuts, depicts various scenes from the life and Passion of Christ. Dürer's work on the "Small Passion" began around 1509 and was completed in 1511, with the series being published in book form that same year.
The woodcut illustrates the biblical episode from the Gospels (Matthew 21:12–13, Mark 11:15–17, Luke 19:45–46, and John 2:13–16) where Jesus expels the merchants and money changers from the Temple in Jerusalem, an event that is traditionally referred to as the Cleansing of the Temple. This scene has been a popular subject in Christian art, symbolizing Christ's challenge to religious authority and his disdain for profanity within sacred spaces.
In Dürer's rendition, the composition is dynamic, capturing the moment of Christ's righteous anger as he overturns the tables of the money changers and drives them out with a whip. The woodcut is characterized by its fine detail, expressive figures, and the intricate interplay of light and shadow, which was a hallmark of Dürer's printmaking technique. The work reflects Dürer's mastery of the woodcut medium and his ability to convey complex narratives and emotions through stark contrasts and a keen attention to detail.
As one of the leading figures of the Northern Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) was renowned for his contributions to printmaking, painting, and art theory. His works, including the "Small Passion" series, have had a profound influence on the development of art in Europe and continue to be studied for their artistic and historical significance. "Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple" stands as a testament to Dürer's skill in capturing biblical stories and his commitment to exploring themes of spirituality and morality through his art.
