Painting Description
"A Rhinoceros" is a woodcut print by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, created in 1515. The work is based on a written description and a brief sketch by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier that year. Dürer never saw the actual rhinoceros, which was the first living example seen in Europe since Roman times. Despite this, his woodcut became very popular in Europe and was copied many times in the following three centuries.
With its detailed and imaginative representation, the print depicts the rhinoceros with a suit of armor-like skin, complete with rivets along the seams and a small twisted horn on its back, none of which are features found in a real rhinoceros. The German inscription on the top of the print reads, "On the first of May 1513 AD, the powerful King of Portugal, Manuel of Lisbon, brought such a living animal from India, called a rhinoceros. This is an accurate representation." Despite the inaccuracies, Dürer's Rhinoceros was regarded as a true representation of the species and influenced the depiction of rhinoceroses in European art for centuries.
The woodcut itself measures approximately 23.5 cm × 29.8 cm, and while it is not known how many prints were originally made, the surviving impressions suggest that the woodcut was very popular and widely distributed. "A Rhinoceros" is considered one of Dürer's most famous and iconic works, exemplifying the artist's skill in translating hearsay and limited information into a compelling visual image. It remains an important work in the study of both Renaissance art and the representation of animals in art history.
