Painting Description
"The Floriansfolge" is a series of eight woodcut prints created by the German artist Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480–1538), a key figure of the Danube School and known for his significant contributions to the development of landscape painting. The series, created around 1515-1516, is dedicated to Saint Florian, a Christian saint and the patron of Upper Austria, where Altdorfer spent most of his life.
The Floriansfolge, or "St. Florian's Sequence," depicts the life, martyrdom, and miracles of Saint Florian in a narrative sequence, a common practice in religious art during the Renaissance. The series begins with Florian's appointment as a Roman military commander and ends with posthumous miracles attributed to him. Each print in the series is rich in detail, showcasing Altdorfer's skill in capturing both human figures and their surrounding landscapes.
The Floriansfolge is considered a significant work in Altdorfer's oeuvre, demonstrating his innovative approach to narrative and his ability to integrate landscape and figure. It also reflects the religious and cultural context of early 16th-century Germany, a period marked by the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation and a growing interest in regional saints. Today, the series is held in various collections worldwide, including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
