Painting Description
The Fall and Redemption of Man (Bartsch, Holl. 1-40; Winzinger 25-64) is a series of forty woodblock prints executed by the German Renaissance master Albrechttdorfer, active in the early 16th century. The series illustrates the biblical narrative of the human race's fall from grace and subsequent redemption, from the Book of Genesis to the Book of Revelation.
tdorfer's storytelling ability and proficiency in woodblock printing are vividly displayed in this series, which is considered one of his most important graphic works. At the time of their creation, these prints were a groundbreaking departure from traditional iconography, depicting the religious narratives with an unprecedented level of detail and narrative dynamism.
The series begins with depictions of the original sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, moving through significant biblical events such as the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel, before reaching the life of Christ. The second half of the series focuses on Christ's life, death, and resurrection, culminating in the Last Judgment and the redemption of mankind.
Renowned for his innovative use of landscape to set the scene for his religious subjects, Altdorfer imbued these prints with rich, detailed backgrounds that represent some of the earliest examples of pure landscape in Western art.
The Fall and Redemption of Man (Bartsch, Holl. 1-40; Winzinger 25-64) now belong to several museum collections worldwide, including the British Museum, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
