Painting Description
"Ahasuerus and Haman" is a noted artwork by Dutch painter Aert De Gelder. Painted circa 1685, it is steeped in the influences of the Dutch Golden Age, and in particular the artist's celebrated tutor, Rembrandt van Rijn.
The painting portrays a scene from the Old Testament Book of Esther. Ahasuerus (often identified as Xerxes I) is depicted sitting on a throne, extending his gold scepter towards Esther (not shown in the painting), as her adoptive father Mordecai is honored and Haman, a royal vizier who plotted against the Jews, watches the proceedings.
Gelder uses dramatic chiaroscuro to underline the emotional tension in the scene, guiding the viewer's eye from the richly attired and brightly illuminated Ahasuerus to the shadowy figure of Haman. Reminant of Rembrandt's style, the figures are rendered with lifelike realism and expressive details. The artwork is a testament to Gelder's masterful understanding of light and shade, his attention to historical accuracy in costume and setting, and his interest in conveying the psychological depth of biblical narratives.
The painting belongs to the collection of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Its bold emotional intensity and exquisite pictorial details make it an important example of De Gelder's skill and a significant contribution to the Dutch Golden Age of painting.
