Painting Description
"The Flight into Egypt" is a significant early 17th-century painting by the German artist Adam Elsheimer. Created in 1609, during Elsheimer's residence in Rome, this small-scale oil on copper artwork measures 31 cm × 41 cm and is renowned for its detailed depiction and innovative use of chiaroscuro and light, which would later influence prominent Baroque artists, including Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens.
The painting illustrates the biblical episode described in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:13-15), in which the Holy Family, consisting of Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus, flee to Egypt to escape King Herod's Massacre of the Innocents. Elsheimer's rendition is particularly noted for its realistic portrayal of a nocturnal setting, a rarity at the time, which adds a dramatic intensity to the scene. The work is also distinguished by its meticulous attention to the effects of light, both natural and divine, as seen in the depiction of the starlit sky and the angel guiding the family.
"The Flight into Egypt" is housed in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany, and remains a critical piece for studying the evolution of landscape and nocturnal painting in European art. Elsheimer's innovative approach in this work not only marks a pivotal point in his own artistic career but also signifies a broader influence on the development of naturalistic and dramatic illumination in painting during the Baroque period.
