Painting Description
''Flight into Egypt'' (1609) is a small oil-on-copper painting by the German artist Adam Elsheimer, who was active in Rome during the early 17th century. The painting, measuring 31 cm × 41 cm (12 in × 16 in), is housed in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany. It depicts the biblical episode of the Holy Family's escape to Egypt, as described in the Gospel of Matthew (2:13-23), to avoid the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by King Herod.
Elsheimer's ''Flight into Egypt'' is celebrated for its detailed rendering and innovative use of chiaroscuro and atmospheric effects, which would later influence prominent Baroque painters such as Rembrandt and Claude Lorrain. The nocturnal scene is one of the earliest known European paintings to depict the night sky with such accuracy, featuring a crescent moon and the Milky Way, which was a groundbreaking representation at the time.
The composition is intimate and serene, with the Holy Family positioned in the lower left corner, making their way through a dark, dense landscape illuminated by the soft, ethereal light of an angel who guides them. The work is notable for its combination of landscape and narrative, and the way Elsheimer harmonizes naturalism with the divine subject matter.
Adam Elsheimer's ''Flight into Egypt'' is considered a masterpiece of Baroque painting and a significant contribution to the development of nocturnal scenes in European art. Its influence extended beyond painting, as the printmaker Hendrik Goudt produced engravings of the work, which further disseminated Elsheimer's innovative approach to light and atmosphere.
